The representation of gender and region
Gender is represented in many ways, through clothes, how they are angled in a shot, movement, colours and appearances like hair. Region is also represented in many ways, for example through ethnicity, clothes, local settings and details like having an accent. These representations help give the viewers a broader understand of what their watching without having to literally tell them. Both of these are stereotypes.
Examples of gender being portrayed it: A woman wears more feminine type clothes like a skirt or a shirt with (e.g.) flowers. Also the woman is wearing yellow which represents a cosy environment for women. With this we could deduce that it was a female. Another way we can portray gender is by movement. If it was a male he would be stronger in his steps and not as gentle as a woman. These are the obvious signs but there are trickier ones to spot like camera angles on a person. For example a man would be a bit higher than the camera to show he is a man with power whereas a woman may be a bit lower to show that they’re not as superior.
Examples of region being portrayed: There are many ways to show ones region, the two main examples are skin colour and accents. If the person was black we would expect him to be from an African country and an accent from there too. This African may also wear African styled clothes for the viewer to understand his cultural background. Local setting can be used to portray a person’s community in many ways like the busyness of the street, how people react to others and even how well it is looked after.
However people have to be really careful because when using stereotypes to won’t want to offend or upset and viewers. This could cause lack of viewers and maybe protests against your show.
